Meeting of the Intellectual Women’s Association of Ho Chi Minh City

For celebration of the Lunar New Year 2016, the Intellectual Women’s Association of Ho Chi Minh City (IWAH) invited all of its members to attend a cozy early spring meeting on February 16, 2016 at the Women's Union in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

Legal Assistance to Migrant Workers in Ho Chi Minh City

Implementation of legal assistance activities for migrant workers coming from other localities to HCMC is useful to administrative management and also meaningful to workers. On December 29, 2015 the Social Work and Community Development Research & Consultancy Center (SDRC) in collaboration with the Center for Judicial Support for the Poor in Ho Chi Minh City and the HCM City University of Law (HCMCUL) held a seminar on “Legal Assistance to Migrant Workers coming from Other Localities to Ho Chi Minh City” at the Training School for Agricultural and Rural Development Managers No.2. Many representatives of the local authorities, centers and various organizations were present at the seminar. The purpose of the seminar was to report the activities of the project on "Promotion and protection of rights for migrant workers coming from other localities to Ho Chi Minh City", and also to collect additional solutions to this social issue.

The Economic and Cultural Values of Doing Household Chores and Gender Equality Issues in Ho Chi Minh City

On December 18, 2015, the Women's Union in Ho Chi Minh City held a seminar reporting on the results of research performed on the cultural and economic values of doing household chores and gender equality issues in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The research project was conducted by the lecturers and students of the Sociology Faculty at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, HCMC, under the supervision of Dr. Tran Phi Phuong.

A documentary film "Madam Phung’s Last Journey"

The Institute for Family and Gender Studies, a member unit of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences (SISS) in Ho Chi Minh City, presented a documentary film entitled "Madam Phung’s Last Journey" on January 25, 2016. After the presentation, participants had the opportunity to chat and direct questions to the film director, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham.

A Talk on Health and Wellness for Women

Associate Professor Dr. Vo Minh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Department of Obstetrics, HCMC University of Medicine & Pharmacy conducted a presentation on women’s reproductive health on December 15, 2015 in a series of activities with the theme on "Activism Against Gender-based Violence" of the American Center in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

A Seminar on Women and Leadership

A seminar was held on December 18, 2015 in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) with cooperation between the Southern Institute of Social Sciences- a member unit of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences- and the Global Engagement Institute (GEI- USA). The team leader was Dr. Jacqueline Shahzadi (University of California). The purpose of the seminar was to share research and teaching experiences and implementing them for women, youth and girls.

A March Celebration

On March 8, 2016 Hoa Sen University held a pertinent seminar to commemorate International Women's Day where Betty Friedan’s book “The Feminine Mystique” was discussed. A Vietnamese version was recently translated and published by the Hoa Sen University Press for the first time. The discussion was jointly organized by three Hoa Sen University departments, namely: the Hoa Sen University Bookstore, the Gender and Society Research Center and the Hoa Sen University Press at the Phuong Nam Book Café, Nguyen Van Binh Book Street, District 1, HCMC. Although this book was first offered to the public on December 9, 2015 by the Gender and Society Research Center, the discussion attracted many Book Street visitors who stopped by to attend the meeting.

Many policies have been enacted and enforced in order to enhance the role and position of women in this field. It is noted that there are now more and more women holding important positions in various social and political agencies and organizations.
